Attractive outdoor signs make your company highly visible to passersby and invite customers into your establishment. But, without routine sign maintenance, your streetside calling card can become damaged and dirty, driving people away from your business. Below is a short guide on how to take care of your signage.

How to Keep Your Signage Like New

1. Secure the Site

Before starting any sign maintenance work, secure the area. Estimate how much space you’ll need to work in, and place safety markers to keep people out of harm’s way. Even if the signage is at a low height or out of the way, alert pedestrians of ongoing work.

2. Dismantle

Once you’ve secured the area, disassemble the sign’s components for better access and visibility. Remove brackets, frames, panels, and hardware, including the lighting and its parts. When working on an electrical sign, cut the power off for safety.

3. Examine & Testsign maintenance

Inspect every part and check for signs of damage or wear. Test and, if necessary, replace electrical components like wiring, sockets, and ballasts to minimize fire hazards. Switch out bulbs for brighter illumination and energy efficiency. Look for peeling, cracks, tears, or holes on panels. Check for rust on frames and brackets — you may need to change these pieces to avoid compromising your sign’s structural integrity.

4. Clean Thoroughly

While your sign is disassembled, clean it thoroughly to restore its luster. Scrub panels and frames with warm, soapy water, and wipe down surfaces that shouldn’t get wet with a soft, dry cloth.

5. Put It Back Together

Dry each washed component first before reassembling your sign. Replace any broken parts, and tighten loose bolts and brackets to keep it sturdy in the elements. After you’ve completed sign maintenance, clean up the job site to ensure the area is free of safety hazards.
