If you have jaw surgery coming up to realign your teeth or treat another condition, how you prepare can have a major impact on the success of the procedure. Some preparations will help with healing, while others affect the safety of the procedure, so in some cases, preparation is necessary to have the surgery at all. Here's what you can do to get ready.

Your Guide to Preparing for Jaw Surgery

Months Before Jaw Surgery

Long before your surgery starts, you should be seeing your dentist or orthodontist regularly. Talk to them to get an understanding of your condition and treatment options, and plan a course of treatment that includes oral surgery. It’s important to note that tobacco use can create complications with oral surgery. If you smoke, talk to your doctor about steps you can take to quit, such as guided meditation or nicotine patches.

Weeks Before Jaw Surgery

Once you've decided on surgical treatment, you'll need to meet your oral surgeon. They'll give you more details about the procedure and its expected outcomes, and will then help you schedule it. Once you have a date, request time off work for your recovery, and plan transportation and care with a friend or loved one. Initial healing for jaw surgery typically takes six weeks, but you may feel okay to go back to work or school sooner. Also, ask your oral surgeon if you need to discontinue any medications before your procedure, as some types can interfere with the anesthesia or cause other surgery complications.

Days Before Jaw Surgery

Jaw SurgeryYou’ll likely need to be on a liquid or soft foods diet after your procedure, so go shopping and get the foods you need, including soup, mashed potatoes, jello, ice cream, and applesauce. Make sure to attend any preparatory appointments requested by your dentist or surgeon.

Right Before Jaw Surgery

If you’re going to be under general anesthesia, your surgeon will advise you not to eat the night before your procedure. Come to the surgery center prepared, wearing comfortable clothing and glasses if you need them. Don't wear contacts or makeup, as these could contaminate the surgical field.
