Dust storms are a relatively common occurrence in Nevada, but they can be tough on your HVAC system. For the most part, air conditioning units are self-contained, but they require unrestricted airflow to operate properly. Dust storms force debris into the coils and prevent airflow by suffocating the area around them with dust and particles. Here are some facts you should know before the next dust storm hits.

How to Take Care of Your Air Conditioner During a Dust Storm

Dust storms distribute small and thick heavy metals, fungi, and dust. These particles are slammed against your HVAC system at speeds of 30 to 60 mph. Air conditioning units blow warm air out from your home, but they can’t always go against the intensity of a dust storm. Since these storms don’t last long, shut down the air conditioner for about 15 minutes until the storm passes. Also, walk through your home and make sure there were no open windows or doors. Dust in the home will blow out and potentially clog the HVAC system.

What to Do After the Storm

Air ConditioningThere are several maintenance issues to address as soon as the storm passes. Since the AC uses the fan and filtering system from the furnace, check the filter first. Over the next couple of days, any dust inside the house can find its way to the filter. If it is visibly filthy, then change it. If not, consider changing it within the next month. Keeping the filter clean will encourage positive air flow through the air conditioning system; otherwise, the system has to work harder, leading to premature breakdowns and higher utility bills.

How to Clean the Unit

Shut off the air conditioning system and rinse off the unit with a light spray. A hard spray could push the dust particles deeper into the unit. Once it dries, vacuum the coils to retrieve any remaining particles. If any strange smells or sounds come from the air conditioner after a dust storm, call an HVAC contractor immediately for an inspection.
