4 Tips for Maintaining Your AC Unit, West Haven, Connecticut

If you have a whole-house AC unit, you don’t want it to work harder than it needs to; your system will wear out quicker, and your energy bills will skyrocket. Instead, focus on proper maintenance—with the help of an HVAC contractor—to ensure optimal efficiency for many years to come.

A Guide to Maintaining Your Cooling System

1. Shut Off the Power

Shut off the unit’s power before performing any cleaning or routine maintenance. There should be a visible shut-off box located near the unit, but if you don’t see it, you can also go straight to the breaker box and turn off the power from there.

2. Clean Around the Unit

HVAC ContractorMake sure the area around your outdoor AC unit is clear of vegetation and debris. Rake away loose leaves and debris and remove plants and branches within a two-foot radius of the unit. This will prevent anything from blocking the airflow, reducing energy waste.

3. Clean the Interior

Lift the outer cover and use a vacuum to get rid of any leaves, twigs, or debris that may have found their way inside. Locate the evaporator coil door and remove it. Dust off the coil and spray it down with a no-rinse coil cleaner. When the cleaner is no longer entering the drip pan below, use soapy water to get rid of any grime. For a more thorough cleaning, contact an HVAC contractor.

4. Change the Filter

The filter should be changed at the beginning of the season and every few months. If it gets clogged with dirt and debris, the airflow won’t work as well, decreasing the efficiency of the unit. If you live in a dusty area or have pets, change the filter every month. Shut off the system’s power before pulling out the old filter.
