Of all of the appliances in your kitchen, the refrigerator is the one everyone uses, and it demands a constant stream of energy to keep its contents cold. Unfortunately, with the weather warming up, your refrigerator will work even harder to maintain the proper temperature inside. Tending to any problems as soon as possible is the best way to minimize the overall refrigerator repair costs. If you’re unsure what constitutes as a problem, here are some of the most common issues.

5 Typical Refrigerator Problems

1. Not Cold Enough

There are a few possibilities for warm air, such as a broken thermostat, blocked vents, or clogged coils. To confirm the thermostat’s efficacy, you can place a small refrigerator thermometer inside. For the vents and coils, make sure they aren’t covered in dust.

2. Too Cold

3. Frost Buildup

In the freezer, an excessive amount of frost is usually the result of a crack in the rubber seal around the perimeter of the door. When it’s damaged, the warm air surrounding the refrigerator can seep in. Thankfully, these can be replaced.

4. Broken Ice Maker or Water Dispenser

If you have a refrigerator with these features and neither are working, the water inlet valve could be clogged or broken; it's located in the back, near the bottom of the appliance. You can check for a clog by testing the water supply line. First, shut off the main valve and then remove the line; if the water sputters, the issue is with the line, but if it’s a steady flow, then the problem is with the valve.

5. Strange Sounds

Many refrigerators give off a loud hum now and then; this is caused by the fan motor of the compressor. However, anything else, like clicking or rattling, needs to be inspected. Something could be loose, or the electrical control board could be broken.
