Red wine may pair well with foods such as pasta and pizza, but it can also be incredibly tough on the teeth, creating the need for teeth whitening and decay removal. Fortunately, by making a few simple changes during a dinner party or evening relaxing at home, you can prevent problems. Here are three tips for reducing dental damage caused by red wine.

Ways to Prevent Wine-Related Dental Problems

1. Keep Your Teeth Clean

Since the tannins in red wine cling to the teeth, brush twice a day and floss to remove plaque deposits. If you drink red wine and have noticed some dinginess, talk with your dentist about teeth whitening. Since enamel is porous, the pigment in wine could discolor the underlying dentin. However, teeth whitening can whisk away stains and make it easier to detect future stains.

2. Drink Water Afterwards

In addition to rinsing away the tannins and sugars that cause discoloration and decay, you can also stay hydrated.

3. Avoid Brushing During the Acidic Window

Anytime you eat or drink, it disrupts the natural pH of your mouth. These acidity changes can last between five and 20 minutes, and brushing during this timeframe can whisk away dental enamel and lead to decay. To protect your teeth, try to avoid brushing your teeth during this window. Wait until about an hour after drinking wine to brush.
