The sand bunker is the last place you want to be on a golf course, and anyone who’s been there knows you can quickly rack up a stroke count trying to get out. Mastering bunkers is part of the game, and getting out is easier than you may think. With the right technique and practice, you’ll be on the green in no time and may even sink the shot.

Keys to Getting Out of a Sand Trap

1. Get the Right Stance

You’ll need to adjust your golf stance, especially if you’re on a significant incline in the sand bunker. Get into your normal stance and slowly draw your front foot back. It’ll feel awkward at first, which is why practice is needed. Open your stance so that the ball is near your front foot. The closer you are to the face of the bunker, the closer your foot should be to the ball.

2. Aim Correctly

golfBefore you swing, make sure the face of your sand wedge is looking almost completely up at the sky. This position will allow you to scoop the ball when hitting. If you’re aiming to simply get out of the bunker, pop the ball up the shortest wall. If you’re aiming for the hole, adjust your position accordingly. When you swing, aim roughly two inches behind the ball.

3. Follow Through

Start by swinging at roughly 80% speed, making sure the club head glides in a sliding motion rather than a downward one. In essence, you’re throwing sand out of the bunker, and in turn, the ball follows. To ensure you throw the intended amount, make sure your shot follows through the same way it would on the fairway. Keep practicing in your spare time to develop the technique.
