Like humans, dogs can experience anxiety for a broad range of reasons. This unease can manifest in different ways with behaviors ranging from subtle to obvious. If your pup exhibits these symptoms, speak with a veterinarian about ways you can curb their nerves and improve their overall quality of life. Here are a few of the most common signs of anxiety to watch for.

5 Indicators of Canine Anxiety

1. Hiding

Often, this behavior is seen during events that make a dog feel unsafe. Thunderstorms and fireworks, for example, may send your pup running for shelter. In this case, providing access to a safe space may be the best course of action to put your dog at ease.

2. Shaking

Visible trembling indicates high levels of stress in a dog. Similar to hiding, this symptom may be caused by loud noises or unfamiliar situations. While it’s likely a sign of anxiety, shaking may also indicate illness, so contact a veterinarian immediately if lethargy, refusal to eat, or any other unfamiliar symptoms accompany the shaking.

veterinarian3. Barking or Whining

While dogs may whine when they’re afraid, vocalization can also be a symptom of separation anxiety. Many training cues can be used to minimize stress after you leave. For example, certain routine changes, such as leaving a TV on or hiring a dog walker, can help combat their anxiety.

4. Attempting to Escape

If your pup feels trapped or unsafe in a certain situation, they may be more likely to flee. As such, it’s no surprise that more dogs run away on July 4th than on any other day—due to the fireworks. For some dogs, being in an enclosed space such as a crate may only exacerbate anxiety, so allow them to roam the house if that’s what they want. Just make sure all doors and exits are tightly sealed or secured.

5. Panting, Licking, or Drooling

Just like people, dogs’ breathing rate may increase when they become nervous. You may notice panting, along with compulsive behaviors, such as licking or drooling. Watch for signs of chewing at their fur, as this habit can cause sores that warrant attention from a veterinarian.
