While it’s imperative to water your trees during the warmer months, it’s possible to overwater them and cause damage. Improper tree care, flooding from constant rainfall, or an ineffective sprinkler system can also contribute to a deteriorating tree.  If you notice the leaves yellowing, water pooling around the base, or water-soaked blisters on the tree, it’s probably getting too much water. By following these steps, you can keep it alive and healthy.

How to Salvage an Overwatered Tree

1. Reduce Water Intake

The first step to take when you see a pool of water around the tree is to turn off the sprinkler system and immediately stop watering it. You’ll know how long to hold-off before resuming your normal tree care by performing the screwdriver test. Using a large screwdriver, insert the blade into the ground. If it easily goes in up to six inches, the tree doesn’t need more water.

2. Adjust the Soil

Tree CareAnother tree care measure you can take is to remove the soil around it so there is only an inch covering its roots. Once it’s cleared, remove any weeds and then place 3 to 4 inches of mulch around its base. This should remove the excess water over time.

3. Check Sprinklers and Downspout Drains

When you notice signs of overwatering, check your home’s sprinkler system and gutter downspout drain. If the sprinklers are too close to the tree, they can provide excessive water and will need to be moved further away. Similarly, if the downspout is draining water in the direction of the tree, adjusting it to flow in another direction can help solve the problem.
