The role of sugar in promoting decay and other oral health issues is well known, but sweets aren't the only foods that can have a detrimental effect on teeth. Here are four other common food items that dentists recognize as potentially damaging to the teeth and gums.

4 Foods That Can Damage Teeth

1. Ice

Ice may be just frozen water, but its solid texture and glass-like crunch can spell trouble for teeth. Chewing on ice may damage tooth enamel or chip or break weakened teeth. If you have sensitive teeth, the jolt of ice's temperature can also be uncomfortable. Dentists recommend enjoying only small pellets of crushed ice by letting them melt on your tongue.

dentists2. Citrus

Lemons, limes, and other citruses are highly acidic. With frequent consumption, these acids eat away at tooth enamel. Citruses, like all fruits, also contain natural sugars that encourage tooth decay. If you eat the fruits or drink their juice, follow up with water to rinse the acid and sugar away.

3. Carbonated Beverages

While unsweetened sparkling waters are far better for the teeth than sugary sodas, dentists often cite some additional concerns. First, all carbonated beverages are more acidic than non-carbonated ones. Second, any carbonated beverages, even sparkling waters, flavored with sugar are detrimental to the teeth and gums. Every time you take a sip, you’re washing the entire mouth with sugary liquid.

4. Dried Fruit

Dried fruits like raisins have the drawbacks of natural stickiness and high sugar content. They can be difficult to remove, which may result in more tooth decay.
