You spend a good portion of your day on a mattress, so you’ll want to find one that’s comfortable for you when you’re on the market for a new one. Before making a purchase, thoroughly test out the product to ensure it provides enough support and doesn’t cause you or your partner discomfort in your preferred sleep positions. Here are a few do’s and don’ts for testing out potential purchases at the bedding store.

Do:

Explore different firmness options.

There are many styles of mattresses available, each with their own benefits and limitations. Memory foam contours your body to provide extra comfort, but can grow hot overnight. Pillow top varieties have additional padding on the surface to increase softness and comfort, but may not give enough support with those with back pain. Firm mattresses are a favorite among back sleepers for their support, but might cause hip pain on people who sleep on their sides.

Lay the same way you sleep.

Since different mattresses provide varying levels of comfort for every sleep position, simply laying on your back to test it will only be beneficial if you’re a back sleeper. To get a better idea of what it would be like to own that product, lay on it as you would if you were asleep.

Try it out for 15 minutes.

Once you’re narrowing down your options, don’t be afraid to lie down for at least fifteen minutes. This gives you ample time to try different positions and settle into the mattress to test its comfort in the long term.

mattressDon’t:

Only push it down or sit.

A bed might seem comfortable when you touch or sit on it, but that won’t tell you how it feels to lay on it. To test out a mattress, always lay down on it fully.

Dismiss styles you’ve never tried.

If you’ve had a firm mattress for years or have always purchased soft ones, consider something new. Chances are, you’re not happy with your current type if you’re switching it, and your preferences and needs can change over time. Test out different options at the store, even if you don’t believe you’ll like them.

Forget your partner’s needs.

If you share a bed with a spouse or partner, make sure they’re a part of the shopping trip. People have different needs and features they look for in a comfortable mattress, so ensure everyone who’ll be sleeping on your new bed is happy with it.
