If you’re planning a trip to Kauai, exploring the Nā Pali Coast should be included in your travel plans. The area is filled with vibrant vegetation and is home to a variety of breathtaking sea caves that were formed when ocean water carved the cliffs. To help plan your island adventure, here are five areas to explore on a sea cave tour.

5 Sea Caves on the Nā Pali Coast

1. Honopu Sea Cave

You’ll know you’re near when you hear the trickling sounds of the small waterfall at the cave’s expansive entrance. On a sea cave tour, you’ll get an up-close look at aquatic life just below the water’s surface, and you might encounter white tip reef sharks and schools of fish. You may also see noddy terns flying while they hunt for small aquatic animals under the water’s surface. The flecks of red and pink you’ll spot are coral growing out of the rock.

2. Honopu Sea Arch

Soaring over 3,000 feet into the air, the colossal Honopu Sea Arch is a popular attraction featured in several films. It separates two secluded beaches, which can’t be accessed on roads or hiking trails. When the wind blows through the arch, it creates a sound reminiscent of blowing into a conch shell. You’ll also hear the sound of a waterfall cascading into the ocean.

3. Pohakuao Falls & Sea Arch

Make sure to take snapshots, as you’ll view some of the tallest cliffs in Hawaii, ranging from 3,000 to 4,000 feet. When navigating the area on a sea cave tour, your raft will also come close to the Pohakuao Falls.

4. Wa‘iahuakua Sea Cave

This sea cave features a front and back entrance with winding channels in between. During a sea cave tour, you’ll see a waterfall trickling over the back entrance and another in one of the hallways. Minerals and sunlight seeping through the cave create hazy shadows in the liquid.

5. Waiwaipuhi Sea Cave

Bring a raincoat or poncho on the sea cave tour, as you’re bound to get splashed in the Waiwaipuhi Sea Cave. The rock formation features a waterfall at its entrance and feeling the mist can be refreshing in the tropical heat. When you get inside, don’t forget to look up at green hues on the moss-covered ceiling.
