If you have a tooth that’s severely infected or decayed, your dentist or oral surgeon may recommend root canal treatment. Although the procedure may sound frightening, it’s extremely safe, effective, and — thanks to anesthesia — no more painful than getting a simple filling. To encourage people to seek treatment promptly, May 5 to May 11 has been designated Root Canal Awareness Week. To honor the occasion, here’s a primer on the topic and how dental professionals can help.

What to Know About Root Canal Treatments

Why You May Need One

The purpose of root canal treatment is to save a tooth when its nerve tissue or pulp are damaged, leading to an infection or an unpleasant abscess. You can limit the risk of needing this procedure by brushing twice daily, flossing, visiting your dentist for biannual cleanings, and otherwise following proper dental hygiene. Cracks or chips in teeth can also cause this problem, so if you grind your teeth or clench your jaw, talk to your dental professional or oral surgeon about potential solutions.

How They Work

oral surgeonDuring the procedure, your dentist will drill down to the infected pulp, remove it, clean the hollow chamber, and seal the tooth. You’ll receive anesthesia to ensure your comfort during the process. Once the anesthesia wears off, mild discomfort is normal, but you can combat it with over-the-counter analgesics and ice packs. The actual root canal procedure can be completed in a single appointment. However, you may need an initial consultation for X-rays and a follow-up visit so your provider can check your healing progress.

How an Oral Surgeon Can Help

Sometimes, root canal treatment isn’t enough to eliminate an infection entirely. If the infection recurs even after the procedure, your dentist may recommend that you visit an oral surgeon for an apicoectomy. During this treatment, your surgeon will apply local anesthetic and remove the infected tissue, as well as the last few millimeters, or the apex, of the tooth’s root. They’ll then replace it with a harmless biocompatible material. This will help prevent future infections and preserve your natural tooth, so you won’t need dental implants.
