As the weather warms up, now is the perfect time to roll up your sleeves and tackle some work around the house. An HVAC tuneup should be at the top of your spring to-do list. To ensure your system runs smoothly and efficiently, tackle each task below before turning on your AC unit for the first time this season.

Spring Care Guide for AC Units

1. Test the Thermostat

The thermostat is the brain of your air conditioner, and it needs to function perfectly as you move the dial from “heat” to “cool.” Change the battery if you haven’t replaced it in over a year. Check the temperature reading to see if it’s accurate; if the thermostat is too close to a vent or just inside a window, for example, it won’t get a precise reading. Consider upgrading to a programmable or smart thermostat to make your home more energy-efficient.

2. Clean the Outdoor Unitac unit

The outdoor AC unit has been subject to the elements all winter long, so it’s time to give it some care. Create a 2-foot buffer around the unit by removing debris and trimming shrubs. If you have a dog or young children, consider installing a fence so the unit won’t get damaged during outdoor playtime. Dirt and pollen have likely built up on the condenser fan, so spray it as much as you can with a hose. Your best bet is to hire an HVAC contractor to clear your system entirely.

3. Change the Air Filter

Your air filter is probably due for a replacement. Check your owner’s manual to see which type your AC unit requires, purchase a pack, and replace the filter before you turn on the system for the first time. Set up a reminder to replace the filter every four to six weeks while the system is in use.
