Now that winter is over, it’s time to trade in your shovel for a gardening hoe. Spring is the time of year when the plants and shrubbery on your property come back to life. But to ensure your garden remains healthy throughout the upcoming months, it’s crucial to take the following preparation steps.

How to Get Your Garden Ready for Spring

1. Prepare the soil                                                                                                                                                                            You can’t grow good quality, healthy plants in poor soil. Amend your garden soil by adding some compost and fertilizer before you plant. Turn over the soil in the vegetable garden to loosen it for easier planting, In your containers, remove 1/3 to ½ of the soil, loosen the remaining soil, dispose of any plant or root debris and then add new soil as you replant for the new growing season.

2. Remove Weeds

plantWeeds are invasive seeds that steal sunlight, water, and nutrients from the healthy plants in your garden. To prevent them from invading your landscape, pull them out of the soil early on in the season. Adding a layer of mulch to your garden can also help prevent weed growth.

3. Clean Gardening Tools

Gardening tools, such as hoes, shears, and spades, should also be cleaned, sharpened, and oiled at the beginning of the spring season. This will remove any lingering bacteria or pests that you don’t want to introduce to your healthy garden. Also, it will ensure that they are in good condition for the upcoming months.
