As spring arrives, the flowers are blooming, the days are getting warmer, and homeowners are turning on their air conditioning for the first time this year. Getting your system ready with an air conditioner service will ensure that it runs smoothly and efficiently through the end of the summer. Follow the checklist below, so you don’t miss any maintenance that your system needs.

Spring Air Conditioner Service Checklist

1. Clean the Outdoor Unit

During the winter, some debris and gunk have likely built up around your outdoor compressor unit. Remove any large debris around the air conditioner, so it has at least two feet of space on all sides. This means there shouldn’t be any vegetation or fences directly next to the unit. Grab a hose and wash down the condenser’s fan to clear off all dirt and pollen that has accumulated on it. This will help improve air flow through the fan for more efficient running.

2. Clear the Indoor Vents

Dust them off so that when you turn the system on for the first time, you won’t send a puff of dust into the air that everyone breathes.

3. Schedule a Tune-Up

During a professional air conditioner service, an HVAC technician will clean and test your system. This involves cleaning all the interior coils in your outdoor unit and replacing the dirty air filter. They will then test the system by turning it on. This allows them to see how it functions, and discover any potential issues that could lead to bigger problems such as a breakdown. They’ll handle any necessary repairs, so you know your system is ready to work.
