Getting your first car is an exciting time. After some of the initial newness has worn off, take the time to become fully familiar with your vehicle’s owner manual, so you can provide the right level of care and make sure it runs and looks great for many years to come. Here are a few essential auto maintenance tips to get you started.

What Preventative Auto Maintenance Does Your Car Require?

1. Check Tire Pressure

A good piece of advice for new car owners is to buy a tire pressure gauge. Checking your tire pressure is a very simple and important task you should perform at least once a month. The PSI, or pounds per square inch, the tires should be inflated to can usually be found on the driver’s side door and in the owner’s manual. Keeping them at this proper rating will prevent over- and underinflation, which could result in decreased driving control, reduced gas mileage, increased risk of a blowout, and a shorter life span for the tire.

2. Inspect Fluids

At least once a month, check the engine oil, coolant, power steering fluid, brake fluid, and windshield washer fluid to determine if they are low. Also, change these liquids according to your owner’s manual. Make sure the engine is cold when performing your inspection and check underneath the vehicle for puddles. Bring it to an auto repair shop immediately if you suspect a leak.

3. Wash & Wax Regularly

If you want to maintain your vehicle’s appearance, make it a habit early on to schedule weekly or biweekly car washes. This will remove salt, dead bugs, bird droppings, and road debris before it can deteriorate the paint. Also, apply a coat of wax every three to four months to add an extra layer of protection and to provide some extra shine.
