The marine life around Hawaii is truly unique as there are certain species you can’t find anywhere else in the world. For visitors and locals alike, seeing these animals from a helicopter tour along the Na Pali Coast can be an unforgettable experience. This is particularly true when it comes to Hawaiian monk seals and green sea turtles. Here’s what you should know about these iconic creatures.

Your Guide to Hawaiian Monk Seals & Green Sea Turtles

Hawaiian Monk Seals

As the official state mammal of Hawaii, the monk seal is a native to the islands, and can’t be found anywhere else on earth. These animals can grow to be about 500 pounds and have a gray coat. Through the years, Hawaiian monk seals have decreased drastically in numbers, due to hunting and high mortality rates for young seals.

Most seals live along the coasts of uninhabited islands, but they can sometimes be seen along the Na Pali Coast as well. Conservation groups are working to protect these animals and increase their survival rates.

Green Sea Turtles

Green sea turtles can be found throughout tropical waters around the world, but they’re particularly drawn to islands and coastlines, making them especially popular around Hawaii. They’re the only sea turtle that eats a strictly herbivorous diet as an adult, though young sea turtles feed on small worms and crustaceans. These turtles can grow to three or four feet long, and usually have a dark green shell and skin color.
