Traditional braces help straighten smiles and align bites. However, because wires and brackets can interfere with your ability to keep your teeth clean, many people worry about the onset of cavities. Luckily, with some healthy dental care habits, you can prevent problems. Here are a few important do’s and don’ts for avoiding cavities with braces.

Do:

Brush and floss carefully.

Although it can be tricky to brush and floss when you have braces, continue with your normal oral hygiene routine. When you brush, focus on cleaning the area around the brackets, wires, and gum line. To make flossing easier, consider using an inter-dental cleaner instead of traditional string floss.

Use fluoride.

Fluoride strengthens teeth on a microscopic level by making dental enamel harder. Always use a toothpaste with fluoride when you have braces. Consider talking to the dentist about supplemental varnishes or mouthwashes as well.

Don’t:

Eat sticky, starchy, or sugary foods.

cavityFocus on eating a varied, healthy diet when you have braces and avoid eating sticky, starchy, or sugary foods. Candies, cookies, or bread products that are high in starch and sugar can fuel oral bacteria that cause cavities. Also, drink plenty of water instead of sodas or sports drinks, as they can be high in sugar.

Skip dental visits.

You may be tempted to skip routine dental visits because you will be meeting with an orthodontist regularly. However, having your teeth professionally cleaned prevents plaque and cavity formation. You should also visit the dentist anytime you suspect you may have a cavity, since decay can spread quickly.
