A refrigerator is a staple in any commercial kitchen, but it's also a sophisticated piece of equipment with multiple parts. When it breaks down, it can lead to any number of issues, including unsafe food, increased energy demands, and damaging leaks. To stay on top of potential problems, below are three common signs of a broken refrigerator.

How to Tell If Your Refrigerator Is Broken

1. Prematurely Spoiled Food

If you notice the food in the fridge is going bad well before the manufacturer's suggested expiration date, a repair may be needed. This is a sign the unit can’t maintain a consistent temperature to keep food fresh. Spoiled food is not only a waste of money, but inadvertently consuming it could also be a health hazard.

2. An Overabundance of Frost

But if the frost has built up, it could indicate a malfunction. It might be something as easily fixable as a new seal for the door or it could be a sign of a more serious issue like failing coils.

3. The Refrigerator Stops Running, But the Light Stays On

A fridge that has lost all power will stop running, and the lighting system will go out. But if the motor is no longer humming while the lights remain operational, it could mean a broken compressor. If the unit is self-defrosting, this might also be the result of a problem with the defrosting system inside the fridge.
