The Do’s & Don’ts of Summer Skin Care, New Providence, New Jersey

Summer is almost here, and with it comes heat, humidity, and other environmental factors that can damage and irritate your skin. To keep your complexion healthy and bright, switch up your facial care routine for the months ahead. Here are some summer skin care do’s and don’ts to help you get started.

Do:

Wear sunscreen.

Wearing sunscreen is a must year-round, but it’s particularly important in the summer when you’re spending more time outside and exposing your skin to stronger UVB rays. Applying a broad spectrum facial sunscreen of at least 30 not only reduces your risk of cancer, but it also keeps you looking youthful—according to the Skin Cancer Foundation, 90% of skin aging (wrinkles, fine lines, dark spots) is caused by sun exposure.

Go lighter.

Trade in heavy facial creams and cosmetics for lighter formulas that won’t seal in sweat and clog your pores. Use a potent serum in place of a heavy-duty moisturizer, for example, or try a lightweight tinted moisturizer instead of foundation. Better yet, look for a multi-purpose product that gives you everything you need, such as a full-coverage BB cream with SPF.

Drink lots of water.

New Jersey FacialYou can’t have glowing skin without a well-hydrated body. Drink at least eight glasses of water a day to flush out toxins, improve circulation, and keep your complexion radiant and bright.

Don’t:

Over cleanse.

Excess oil and sweat may tempt you to wash your face five times a day during the summer; however, you should resist this urge. Over cleansing your skin can cause dryness, which promotes oil production and makes the problem worse. Stick to a simple, twice-a-day face washing routine, which will help keep your pores clear of oil and sweat.

Forget to exfoliate.

Facial exfoliation is key because it sloughs away dull, damaged skin cells to reveal a fresh and radiant complexion. It also soaks up excess oil, improves skin tone, and boosts your skin’s ability to absorb the benefits of facial moisturizers and serums.

Ignore your lips.

Don’t forget about your pout! Use a lip balm or moisturizing lipstick with at least SPF 15 to keep your lips soft, smooth, and shielded from the sun.
