Nothing makes a vacation more memorable than sharing it with the whole family, and that, of course, includes your dog. That’s why lodging at pet-friendly cabins for your outdoor adventures is an excellent idea. When you’re hiking through the mountains, however, you’ll need to take extra precautions to protect your furry friend.

How to Keep Your Pet Safe in the Woods

1. Bring Identification

Ideally, your dog should be with you at all times, but you need to be prepared in case you’re separated. Make sure your pet has a collar and tags with updated contact information. This way, if your dog runs off, there’s a chance another family that’s lodging nearby will be able to return them to you.

2. Keep the Leash

Far away from the dangers of vehicles, you might be tempted to let your dog loose and allow them to run free. Unfortunately, dogs can still encounter wildlife and end up badly injured. Ensure your dog is safe under your watchful eye by keeping them on a leash.

3. Pack Food & Water

lodgingThis seems like obvious advice for dog owners, but if you’re not used to hiking with your pet, you may underestimate just how much fuel they’ll need. Without adequate hydration, your dog may attempt to drink water from the ground, but standing water can contain harmful bacteria. Bring snacks for you and your pooch, as much fresh water as you can carry, and a collapsible bowl.

4. Grab a First Aid Kit

Nobody wants to imagine their dog getting hurt on vacation, but it’s better to be prepared for any mishaps. Take a pet-friendly first aid kit out on your hike. ASPCA recommends these basic first aid supplies, so you can make your own kit at home. Make sure you know how to use these items and ensure they aren’t expired.

5. Inspect Their Skin & Paws

During your hike, periodically give your pooch a brief once-over to check for debris. Leaves, thorns, pine needles, burrs, and rocks can irritate skin and get stuck between their toes. Once you return to your lodging, take the time to thoroughly inspect your dog for fleas and ticks.
