If you're experiencing low water pressure, there many potential causes. Some are relatively minor and can be handled with a quick fix, while others will need help from a plumber. Look for these signs to help you get to the root of the problem.

How to Fix Low Water Pressure

1. Problematic Fixtures

If only a single area in your home has low pressure – such as a showerhead or a faucet – chances are the fixture itself is the problem. It may need cleaning, as gunk and calcium deposits may have built up inside. Try scrubbing the aerator at the end of the spout with a brush dipped in a vinegar solution. If this doesn’t work, it may need to be dismantled for more intensive cleansing or fully replaced.

2. Valve Adjustment

Look over the valves supplying the area affected with low water pressure. If any are partly closed, open them up the rest of the way, then check whether this simple fix resolves the water pressure problem.

3. Pressure Regulator Problems

PlumberIf you have a pressure regulator in your home, check its settings after you've checked the water valves. Also listen for the pump. Sometimes the pump either breaks or begins cycling too quickly due to a loss of air in the tank. If this is the issue, you'll need to call a plumber.

4. Water Leaks

Seepage from damaged or corroded pipes can cause plumbing issues. To determine if one of your major supply pipes has a leak, look for any unexplained water damage in your home or yard. A rise in your water bill can also hint at a problem. Inspect visible pipes and patch any holes or cracks with epoxy, plastic, rubber, or water-resistant tape until a plumber can arrive to replace or repair the part. Leaks in underground pipes will be harder to detect and will require professional help.

5. Municipal Source

If the issue is that you simply aren't getting enough water from your main, installing a pressure regulator is a potential solution. This piece of equipment will pump water through your pipes, conveniently raising pressure and ensuring you always have an ample supply. This complex task is best left to experts.
