Light-emitting diode (LED), liquid crystal display (LCD), and organic light-emitting diode (OLED) are the leading TV options on the market today. If you’re trying to set up your home entertainment system, all these acronyms can get a bit confusing. This guide will help you make the right choice on your next purchase.

A Guide to TVs for Home Entertainment Systems

How Do LED, LCD & OLED Differ?

LCD and LED are typically thought of as rivals, but these days, they actually work together. LCD models rely on backlights to illuminate all pixels on the screen simultaneously. In the past, these backlights relied on plasma or cold cathode fluorescent lamps (CCFLs), which consumed significant quantities of energy. To reduce power consumption, those backlights have generally been replaced by LCD bulbs.

OLED units, however, consist of slim organic carbon films layered between semiconductors. When electrical currents are applied, each pixel will light up individually.

Why Choose LCD/LED

These varieties produce higher brightness levels. They can also have massive screens that reach over 100 inches, compared to the generally smaller 90-inch range of OLEDs. They also have a long lifespan, or over a decade. The newer OLEDs claim to last up to 50 years, but the technology is so new and untested that this hasn’t been proven.

Why Choose OLED

home entertainmentSince electricity excites the organic matter in OLEDs, cutting the power source creates a pure black. Rapid changes between light and dark images are processed more quickly, so there are no lingering streaks on the TV. OLEDs have an 84-degree viewing angle versus the LCD’s 54 degrees. OLEDs also use less power since they only have to charge one panel, and their production is less harmful to the environment since it doesn’t involve nitrogen trifluoride, a greenhouse gas.

How to Decide

What you choose will depend on your preferences and home entertainment budget. OLEDs have intense picture quality and perform best in dark rooms for a totally immersive experience. LCD/LED models are generally much cheaper, work better during the daytime or in well-lit rooms, and will last longer.
