Regular window cleaning protects the glass and frames while providing you with clear views of your property. However, it’s important that you use the appropriate products and methods to avoid damaging the glass. Here’s a helpful guide on how to clean windows without running into problems.

How to Clean Windows Without Damaging Glass

Use Gentle Products

When you’re ready to remove dirt, dust, and fingerprints from your windows, use a combination of water, dish soap, and vinegar. Start by rinsing the windows with plain water to remove some of the debris, then follow by spraying a soapy water solution and wiping it off with a cloth. Finish by using a water and vinegar solution to buff out any remaining smudges, and dry with a microfiber cloth that won’t leave lint or streaks.

Treat Stains

windowFor particularly stubborn stains and spots, treat them with alcohol, turpentine, or acetone. These chemicals are strong enough to remove calcium and magnesium deposits, yet they’re gentle enough not to erode low-E coatings. Simply apply the chemical of your choice to a soft cloth, and rub the problem area until it clears.

Remove Scratches Carefully

Occasionally, you may notice scrapes and scuffs on your window glass caused by metal objects. These may occur as the result of using harsh tools, such as blades or steel wool, to clean your windows. Add on part hydrochloric acid to 99 parts water, dip a cloth in it, and blot out the scratches. For deep scratches, you might need to call the professionals for glass repairs or window replacement.
