Menopause is a natural phase all women go through, which signifies the end of her reproductive years. Often, women start to experience its symptoms months or years before menopause actually takes place, with signs first appearing in their 40s or 50s. If you’re approaching middle age, here are some menopause symptoms to watch for.

5 Common Menopause Symptoms

1. Irregular Cycles

During perimenopause (the years before menopause), estrogen levels may fluctuate. As a result, periods may become irregular, with some lasting more than a week or coming very close together. Heavy bleeding may occur, and periods may stop and resume after a year or more.

2. Hot Flashes or Chillsmenopause symptoms

Up to 80% of women experience hot flashes, making them one of the most prevalent menopause symptoms. This sudden sensation of heat can occur at any time of day and generally lasts between 30 seconds and 10 minutes. Characterized by heavy sweating, hot flashes may be followed by chills.

3. Sleep Issues

Menopause can also lead to sleep issues, including night sweats, waking up in the middle of the night, and having trouble falling asleep. These sleep troubles are attributed to decreasing levels of estrogen and progesterone and may be accompanied by anxiety and depression.

4. Breast Fullness/Tenderness

Menopausal hormone changes can also cause breast fullness and pain. Cyclical pain is linked to menstruation and may become more pronounced during perimenopause. Conditions such as cysts can also contribute to breast pain, so the symptom should be addressed by a women’s health specialist if the pain is significant or persistent.

5. Vaginal Changes

The dips in hormones can also cause changes in vaginal health. Dryness may occur, which can lead to painful intercourse and an increased risk of infection. Some women also experience bladder issues, such as urine leakage during activities such as exercise or sneezing.
