Spring cleaning offers the opportunity to purge the old and make way for the new, and your closet is no exception to this. When it comes to sorting men’s clothing, there are a few strategies that will help you ensure you have the right pieces in your closet. Follow this brief guide to get started.

Spring Cleaning Your Wardrobe

1. Take Everything Out

The best way to purge and organize men’s clothing is to open closets and take everything out. You will have an easier time deciding what stays and what goes when everything is in sight. It also helps you make room for items that you plan on keeping, as well as new pieces.

2. Assess the Basics

men's-clothingMake sure your basics (such as undergarments and socks) are in good shape, as well as your suit components (for instance, neutral button-down dress shirts and black slacks). Keeping staples in your closet ensures that you have the perfect piece for any occasion. For casual wear, check the state of your jeans, cotton T-shirts, and long-sleeved outerwear. If anything looks too worn, toss it. As you remove clothing from your wardrobe, make a list of what needs replacing.

3. Eliminate Clothes That Don’t Fit

Make three piles as you sort: items to keep, items to donate, and items to toss. Throw away clothing that looks worn or stained or has holes. If your pieces are in good shape but no longer fit, donate them. Fit should be based on leg length and waist width for pants and sleeve length for shirts and jackets. Men’s clothing, especially suits, must fit like a glove. If collars are too tight or loose, or if the jacket pulls across your back, it’s time to update. If pieces can be brought to a tailor for mending and size adjustments, make another pile.

4. Organize by Season & Style

Place the current season’s clothes toward the front so they’re easily accessible. Organize the clothes within that section by work, casual, and formal wear so everything is easy to spot and grab. Store seasonal items you won’t need for a while toward the back or on a high shelf. Always clean pieces before putting them away, and keep items safe in a garment bag.

5. Clean & Mend

Once you have sorted everything, bring all of your items to the dry cleaners to start the season off with fresh garments. During the same outing, have your tailor repair any minor issues so your whole wardrobe is ready to go.
