Booking a photographer and scheduling a photo shoot can help you to preserve important family memories. Unfortunately, if you dress inappropriately for the event, you may be stuck with the results for quite a long time. If you want to guarantee a family photo you can cherish for years to come, follow these three tips.

Ways to Dress Better for Photo Shoots

1. Consider Coordination

If your photo shoot will involve more than one person, talk carefully about coordination prior to picture day. Think about which clothing and apparel items most people likely already have in their wardrobe, and talk with your photographer about what the scenery will be like. For instance, if you are taking a family photo during the spring, asking family members to come in springtime colors and dark colored pants would work great for a photo shoot in a blooming apple orchard.

2. Tone Down Accessories

photographerAlthough a nice set of earrings or an interesting bracelet can make your outfit pop, standing out isn’t always a good thing when you are in a family portrait. Instead, focus on wearing conservative accessories and styling your makeup in a minimalist way to avoid drawing more attention to yourself than is necessary. During the photo shoot, ask your photographer if anything anyone is wearing is standing out.

3. Avoid Clothes That Call Attention

The clothes you wear should enhance your family’s appearance, not distract from it. Avoid wearing clothing with pictures, writing, or logos (such as T-shirts). Loud-colored clothing tends to draw attention away from faces. Neon clothing does this to an even greater degree. Instead, focus on clothing that compliments your appearances, rather than stealing the spotlight. Check with your photographer to make sure no one’s outfits are too distracting.
