On the surface, golf may not seem like a sport with a high incidence of injury. But just because the game involves no physical contact with other players and is relatively low impact doesn't mean certain bodily positions and repeated movements can't do damage. To reduce your chances of developing joint or back pain when golfing, consider these tips.

How to Protect Your Back & Joints in Golf

1. Practice Good Posture

Effective posture can protect your joints and prevent back pain. Feet should be shoulder-width apart, and your knees should be slightly bent. The trunk needs to tilt forward, but the spine should be straight. Don't stoop your body over the ball as this can place undue pressure on knee joints and overtax the neck.

2. Focus on a Proper Swing

Avoid concentrating the force of your swing in one specific area of the body. Aim to be as fluid as possible, and don't overextend the back as you swing. If you're prone to stiffness, do some gentle stretches before starting the game.

3. Do Regular Strength Training

Golf requires strength to hit long drives, maintain momentum, and safeguard the muscles and joints. Weakness in the shoulders, wrists, and core can all lead to joint or back pain. Stick to a regular schedule of light to moderate strength training, such as working out with free weights, doing traditional squats, and implementing daily cardio.

Implementing these practices will ensure a pain-free golf game, and Stroud Chiropractic Clinic will provide additional help.
