Periodontal disease, better known as gum disease, is one of the most serious oral health issues. It can lead to extreme infection, tooth loss, and gum decay. It’s important to recognize early signs so you can speak with a family dental care professional. When caught in its early stages, it’s much easier to treat.

Common Periodontal Disease Questions

What is it?

Gum disease occurs when plaque and tartar build up below the gum line. Decay-causing bacteria then infect the gums and attack the unprotected roots of your teeth. The primary cause is often not scheduling family dental care checkups and not brushing and flossing. Over time, gum tissues and bone deteriorate, and the teeth are no longer held in place. This leads to extensive tooth loss.

What are the symptoms?

family-dental-care-magnolia-dentalGum disease begins as gingivitis. At first, the gums will appear red and swollen and possibly bleed when brushing and flossing. As it advances, the gums will recede from the teeth. Once it develops into periodontal disease, you’ll experience more frequent bleeding, further gum recession, and pain. Pus may leak from infected gum tissue, and gradually, teeth will become loose and fall out.

Are there treatments?

Gingivitis can usually be resolved by scheduling teeth cleaning and improving your brushing and flossing habits. For full periodontal disease, a family dental care professional can perform a scaling and root planning procedure. This is a deep cleaning where the plaque is removed from the root of the tooth. They may also remove infected gum tissue with a laser.

How can I prevent it?

Brushing and flossing are the only way to prevent gum disease. Do each twice daily and see your dentist at least twice a year for a checkup. Cut down on candies, sugary foods, and acidic drinks and replace them with dark leafy greens, nutrient-rich veggies, and calcium-rich dairy products to strengthen your gums and teeth.
