tooth extraction is a common procedure, and your dentist may recommend removing teeth for various reasons. Whether you are preparing for orthodontic work or experiencing tooth decay, this procedure can help you find relief in the long run. However, you might not be sure what to expect as your appointment draws closer. Below is a brief overview of what you can anticipate before, during, and after a tooth extraction.

What Can You Expect During a Tooth Extraction Procedure?

Preparation

If your dentist notices an issue that could require extraction, they will order an X-ray for a more accurate picture of the problem. They will then discuss the extraction with you and double check your health information. Be open about all of your health conditions and medications. Ask your dentist whether you will be going under local or general anesthesia, so you can arrange a ride to the appointment if necessary.

During Extraction

tooth extractionThe details of your procedure will depend on the type of tooth extraction. For a simple extraction, the dentist will inject a local anesthetic into your gums. This will numb the area to keep you more comfortable during the procedure. Some patients, especially those who are undergoing oral surgery for extraction, will require general anesthesia. Once the dentist completes the extraction, they will stitch up the site and insert gauze into your mouth.

If you are feeling anxious about your procedure, ask your dentist if you can bring headphones to listen to music or a podcast. You should also wear comfortable clothes to the appointment to help you feel at ease.

Recovery

Once you leave the dentist’s office, you will likely need to keep the gauze in your mouth for about 30 minutes. This will help the extraction site clot. You will still experience some numbness in the face as the local anesthetic wears off. Plan to rest for the remainder of the day, and stock your kitchen with soft foods.

Your dentist will either prescribe pain medication or recommend an over-the-counter anti-inflammatory drug like ibuprofen. To control swelling and pain, keep an ice pack on your jaw for 10 minutes at a time. You should also avoid brushing around the extraction site for the first day. While the extraction area will heal in about two weeks, you should call your dentist if you experience bleeding, swelling, severe pain, or signs of infection.
