While homeowners often use their garages for parking cars, many also use it for storage. Unfortunately, it’s easy for clutter to get out of hand, to the point that items get caught in the garage door. Spring is an excellent time to declutter your garage, opening up space and protecting your garage door and opener from unnecessary repairs. Consider these recommendations for emptying your garage while the weather is favorable.

How to Declutter Your Garage This Spring

1. Organize the Contents

Depending on how many belongings you have inside your garage, you might need to plan for a long-term cleaning project. Set a goal to remove at least half of the current clutter in the area. Start in sections, dividing items into three categories: “keep,” “donate,” and “throw away.” Organize all of the possessions you plan to store back in the garage with sturdy containers that can be clearly labeled, storing similar items together.

2. Clean the Space

If your flooring is coated, use your garden hose to spray out any lingering debris or dirt. Wipe away dirt and grime from the garage doors using a mild cleaner and water.

3. Service the Garage Door System

Garage door companies are in higher demand in the fall, so spring is an ideal time to have them inspected and serviced. A technician will test the operation of the opener and identify damage or problems that need to be repaired so you can safely enter and exit the garage. You should also wipe the door sensors with a clean rag and lubricate the tracks and springs for smooth operation.
