Headstones are placed at a gravesite to provide details about the deceased and honor their memory. But to ensure the memorial withstands the test of time, they require upkeep and maintenance. Below are a few tips for keeping a headstone clean.

How to Maintain a Headstone

1. Use Gentle Cleaners & Tools

Over time, moisture and mold can corrode the headstone and cause cracks to form. To prevent this, it’s essential to conduct routine cleanings with non-abrasive solutions; harsh chemicals can corrode the stone. Use a soft brush to remove any lingering dirt and grime. Then, dip a rag in a mixture of dishwashing soap with water, wring out any excess moisture, and gently wipe down the headstone.

2. Clean the Area Around the Headstone

Remove weeds by pulling them from the ground; avoid weed killer chemicals as these can damage the headstone and surrounding markers. Clean up any old flowers that have been left on the grave as they will eventually wilt and stain the stone if not removed.

3. Schedule Stone Restoration When Necessary

Even with routine cleanings, a headstone can become stained or damaged over time. The ground will also sink and move, which causes it to shift. When this occurs, hire a stone specialist to repair the defect. They can restore the headstone by filling in cracks and reinforcing the foundation; this also ensures that it won’t tilt over time.
