If you rely on corrective eyewear, you probably visit an optometrist regularly. In general, those who wear glasses or contact lenses should see their eye doctor once a year for an updated prescription. However, even individuals who have perfect vision can benefit from scheduling eye exams periodically. You might not consider such appointments a critical component of preventive health care, but there are several conditions that an eye doctor can detect long before any other symptoms arise.

3 Medical Conditions Eye Exams Can Detect

1. Diabetes

Because the eyes are so vascular, they can exhibit one of the earliest signs of diabetes. Over time, consistently high blood sugar—which is common among those with unchecked diabetes—can damage the blood vessels in the retina. Since the damage does not typically manifest any symptoms until it has progressed, though, those who have it are not inclined to be tested for diabetes—until their eye doctor points it out.

2. Hypertension

eye examsUncontrolled hypertension, or high blood pressure, has been linked to heart attack, stroke, aneurysm, heart failure, and dementia. In other words, while high blood pressure itself is not necessarily life-threatening, its potential complications can be. If you visit an eye doctor regularly, though, the condition will not go unchecked because hypertension causes visible damage to the blood vessels in the retina. The good news? This damage is reversible if detected early.

3. Multiple Sclerosis

Inflammation of the optic nerve, or what the medical community calls optic neuritis, can be the first symptom of multiple sclerosis (MS). Note that not everyone who has MS will present with optic neuritis, and not everyone who is diagnosed with optic neuritis has MS. However, there is a strong link between the two, which means staying on top of eye exams could ensure early intervention.
