Transferring to hospice care can be a challenge for nurses. Terminally ill patients present unique challenges, and the hospice care atmosphere can be tough to cope with at times. It’s important to understand what to expect as a certified nurse assistant. With a few tips, you’ll be able to provide superior care and establish yourself in a rewarding role.

How to Adjust to Hospice Care as a Nurse

1. Learn to Teach

Because patients in hospice care won’t recover, you’ll have to replace treatment options with understanding. This can range from teaching family members facts and details about their loved one’s condition, how they can help, and what to avoid. You’ll also need to learn to manage patients’ side effects and bodily responses to care so you can provide personalized service that keeps them most comfortable. A patient who persistently licks their lips, for example, likely needs more water.

2. Understand How to Talk About Death

It’s often best to initiate the conversation and inform family members about the reality of the diagnosis. Be respectful yet straightforward so everything is clear.

3. Learn to Listen & Talk

In addition to providing medication, meals, and other things per your medical training, you may need to simply listen. Pay close attention to their feedback to care, and give them time to discuss topics they enjoy. This may include old pets or friends, memories of places they’ve visited, or their final wishes. As a CNA, you can have a profound impact on their last days simply by making them feel comfortable and heard.
