Since both dental bridges and crowns are used to restore smiles—and they have some of the same components—people often refer to them interchangeably. However, each serves a distinct purpose. If you have damaged or missing teeth, here’s what you should know about two of the most popular restorative dentistry approaches.

Dental Crowns

If you have a damaged tooth that’s worth saving, your dentist may recommend a crown. These are essentially caps that fit snugly over vulnerable teeth to restore their structural integrity and prevent further damage. They are typically made of resin, ceramic, or porcelain so they can match the surrounding teeth; however, metal is often used for molars that cannot be seen because it’s more durable. With proper care, crowns can last for about 15 years.

Dental Bridges

crownsDental bridges are used to replace missing teeth, but they rely on the teeth adjacent to the gap for support. Comprised of two abutments, which are essentially crowns that attach to the existing teeth, and one or more pontics, or artificial teeth, between them, bridges are incredibly popular. If you don’t need complete dentures and don't want to get dental implants, bridges are a great alternative. They are ideal for replacing multiple missing teeth because several pontics can fit between the two abutments. With proper care, dental bridges typically last for five to ten years.
