With temperatures finally starting to rise, spring is the perfect time to concentrate on breathing new life into your landscape. Apart from lawn maintenance and adding new flowers to the garden, you should also consider putting tree planting on the to-do list. The towering plants block the sun, which means your yard will remain cool and comfortable for friends and family for many summers to comes. If you’re wondering which trees are best for privacy, shade, and a boost in curb appeal, below are a few options to discuss with your landscaper.

Trees to Revitalize Your Yard

1. Blue Spruce

Also known by the moniker Colorado Spruce, this majestic evergreen flourishes in various areas throughout the country. Grown in well-drained soil, the tree has year-round foliage. This means your yard will always have shade covering when needed. The plants range from 25 feet to over 40 feet in size, so consider planting them around the property perimeter to block views into the yard and house. Because of slow growth, tree pruning requirements are minimal. Needles grow on each branch, so make sure the Blue Spruce is planted in full view of sunlight.

2. Northern Red Oak

tree plantingWith proper care, the Northern Red Oak can live for centuries. Grown in hardiness zones three through seven, the deciduous plant loses its leaves in late fall and remains bare during winter. In spring, the tree will fill your yard with color as the dark pink leaves begin to grow. The foliage turns a vibrant green during summer and transforms to a rich red in early autumn. The tree also produces acorns, which can be used in wreaths, table centerpieces, and other fall decorations around the house. As the plants can reach a mature height of 75 feet, consider tree planting around the yard perimeter for added privacy and curb appeal. To prevent pest infestations that lead to oak wilt, the trees should be pruned during the dormant season.

3. Eastern Red Cedar

Grown in hardiness zones three through nine, this evergreen features spine-like leaves with sharp edges. Through late summer and fall, cones that look like berries grow on the Eastern Red Cedar, attracting birds and small mammals to the yard. In maturity, it can span 40 to 50 feet tall, making the plant a good option for creating shade. Ideal growing conditions include full sunlight and well-drained soil.
