Creamy, sweet and satisfying. These three words perfectly describe the scrumptious taste of some popular Latin desserts. If you’ve never indulged in Latin-styled desserts, here is a guide to some of the most popular ones on Spanish restaurant menus.

Popular Desserts to Try at a Spanish Restaurant

1. Flan

This caramel custard is a staple treat after a hearty meal. A mixture of eggs, milk, vanilla, and sugar are poured into a ceramic pan lined with a caramel coating. It’s cooked in a water bath and placed in the refrigerator until firm. The mini custard confection is then flipped onto a plate so that the caramel is the top layer.

2. Tres Leches

Tres leches—which translates to “three kinds of milk”—forms the basis for this sought-after cake at Spanish restaurants everywhere. Whole milk, sweetened condensed milk, and evaporated milk are combined to create a sticky syrup that is poured over a white cake. Some versions include an infusion of rum and whipping cream for richer and spicier flavors.

3. Arroz con Leche

Spanish restaurantRice and milk are the stars of this pudding dessert. Water, cinnamon and rice is placed in a saucepan, brought to a boil, and then simmered until the water is absorbed. A combination of milk and raisins are then stirred in and brought to another boil. After reducing the heat, the pudding is stirred until the consistency is thick and creamy.

4. Dulce de Leche

Whether drizzled over ice cream or incorporated into cakes for decadent flavoring, dulce de leche is another mainstay at Spanish restaurants. Sweetened condensed milk and water are combined in a saucepan and boiled. The mixture is then reduced and more water is added as needed until the mixture becomes caramel brown. Cinnamon and vanilla are typically added for over-the-top decadence.
