When you’re considering luxury vehicle maintenance, you need to think a little differently about your car than you would for an average vehicle. One of the most useful ways of supporting your engine in these types of vehicles is with an intercooler. Here’s a closer look at how these parts work and why they’re so helpful.

What Is an Intercooler?

An intercooler is a type of add-on device that gets harnessed to an engine (typically one that is supercharged). They are often added to luxury vehicle maintenance as a way to make engines more powerful and efficient. They work through an elaborate system of tubes and are also known as cross-flow heat exchangers.

How Does It Work?

luxury vehicle maintenanceThe chief job of an intercooler is to cool the air inside the engine, which can become hotter than is normal due to the intensity of the super or turbocharged model. Via perpendicular tubes, the warm air is made to interact with a cooling agent that lowers its temperature. The intercooler is covered in fins, which create a large enough surface area for the heat to be distributed as it reduces its temperature.

What Are Its Benefits?

Since hot air means a lower density, it follows that as the intercooler chills the air, the density increases; that allows the engine to burn more fuel faster, increasing the rate of combustion and creating a more powerful engine. Additionally, the cooler air lets the engine avoid a common pitfall that leads to inefficiency, which is why it’s a staple of luxury vehicle maintenance. When the air is too warm, fuel can be susceptible to combustion before the engine is ready, wasting materials, and causing mayhem inside this core part of your vehicle.
