Fences can add curb appeal and serve as a boundary between your property and that of your neighbors. But, if you’re a dog owner, your fence also gives you peace of mind knowing that your canine companion won’t go wandering off your property where they could get lost or hurt. However, dogs are great escape artists. They can dig under the fence and even chew their way through it. Bigger dogs can climb or jump over it, too. Here’s how you can dog-proof your fence.

4 Tactics for Keeping Your Dog Behind the Fence

1. Consider landscaping

Use landscaping to keep your dog from jumping over the fence. The key is to plant dense, sprawling shrubs, such as Boxwood, that even the most agile of dogs won’t be able to jump over. Still, you need to check your shrubs once in a while; your dog might be digging a secret tunnel to get out.

2. Lay an L-Footer

fencesHounds and terriers are some of the dogs that love to dig. A quick and inexpensive way to resolve the digging issue is by creating an L-footer. You lay down a wire mesh against the base of the fence. It’s bent perpendicular to the main structure, so it looks like a letter L. You can either bury it underground or cover it with grass or rocks.

3. Install Coyote Rollers

Coyote rollers are roller bars placed on top of your fence. Taking this measure will stop your dog from gaining purchase as it tries to climb over. They also prevent coyotes from getting in your yard. These rollers are made of aluminum and designed to be safe and weather-proof.

4. Use Bamboo or Reed Rolls

Dogs react to what they see on the other side of the fence. If you have a chain link fence, you might want to install bamboo or reed rolls. This is a relatively inexpensive way to cover your fence, so your dog won't be able to see what’s beyond it.
