When you access water through a private well rather than a municipal system, it falls on you to maintain and repair it. That can be a difficult task, especially if you aren’t familiar with the system. To make the process easier, here are a few key well maintenance tips.

3 Well Maintenance Tips for Homeowners

1. Inspect the Well Cap Regularly

The well cap keeps debris and contaminants from falling into the well and polluting your water supply. It should stay in good condition throughout the year, so schedule a time each month to inspect its integrity and make sure the seal is tight.

2. Keep Toxic Chemicals Away From the Well

well maintenanceYou don’t want to accidentally pollute your own drinking water. To prevent that, do not dispose of chemicals anywhere they might wind up in the water table. For instance, don't change your engine’s oil near the well, and if you notice transmission, brake, or other fluid leaks, clean up the mess and have the leak repaired immediately. Don't store kerosene, fertilizer, gasoline, or diesel containers where they might leak and contaminate the water, and never dump cleansers, paint, or paint thinner onto the ground near your well.

3. Note Changes

Be aware of the region above and around your well and note any changes. For instance, if you notice that plants are dying in your yard, contact a well maintenance service to inspect the area and make sure it hasn’t somehow been contaminated. Do the same if you notice changes in the color, odor, or taste of your water. Once per year, a reputable contractor should inspect your well, service the pump, and make any necessary repairs. This will help you circumvent problems and save you money and hassle in the long run.
