Whenever you go out of town, do you adjust your heating and cooling system before leaving? If the answer is no, you’re probably spending more on utilities than necessary—but you’re not alone. Even travelers who always arrange for someone to get their mail or water their plants tend to forget that they can save energy while away. If you don't want to waste energy—or money—while out of town, here’s what you should do before leaving.

3 Tips for Saving Energy While on Vacation

1. Seal the Windows

Protecting drafty windows will reduce your heating and cooling costs all year-round, and it’s especially smart to do this before leaving on vacation. To seal the windows, start by applying caulk between the siding and the frame on the outside, and then add weatherstripping around the sashes on the inside.

2. Adjust the Thermostat

However, if pets will be staying in the house while you’re gone, make sure to keep the home at a fairly comfortable temperature, and never leave the thermostat below 65 or higher than 78 degrees.

3. Close the Curtains

When the curtains are closed, your heating and cooling system doesn't have to work as hard to maintain a constant temperature. Without the sun streaming through in the summer or cold drafts blowing in cool air during the winter, heating and cooling units don’t have to use as much energy.
