Summer is right around the corner, which means many college students will soon move out of their dorms. While dorm rooms aren’t known for their ample storage space, most students still accumulate an impressive amount of belongings by move-out day. To streamline your packing process and make your workload more manageable, follow these tips to pack efficiently.

How to Pack Your Dorm Room Before Summer Break

1. Start Planning Early

storageBefore you begin packing, decide where you’re moving your belongings and how much storage space you’ll have, which will ensure you’re only taking what you can accommodate. To limit your amount of baggage, you can sell textbooks to incoming students, donate unwanted furniture and clothes, and drop off food items at a food bank.

2. Clean

Cleaning your room will help you discover items you forgot you owned or thought you lost, allowing you to start organizing your belongings. Hang and fold laundry, toss out the trash, sort through old books and papers, and collect items under your bed or behind your desk. Dispose of items you don’t need anymore, then decide what to do with the remainder.

3. Start Packing Early

You won’t do yourself any favors by waiting to pack at the last minute, especially if you have a lot to take with you. To speed up the process and reduce the stress, begin packing out-of-season clothes as soon as you stop needing them, using sturdy boxes and labeling their contents. By writing “Winter clothes” or “Bedroom” on your containers, you’ll locate them more easily when you arrive at your new home.
