Spring and summer are the ideal times of year to take a road trip with your friends or family. But before you head out, it’s essential to ensure that your car is prepared to endure the mileage without any problems along the way. Below are a few car maintenance tips that will ensure a safe journey no matter the destination.

3 Car Maintenance Tips for Before a Road Trip

1. Inspect the Engine Belts

If the engine belt were to stop functioning during the road trip, it could cause your engine to overheat and breakdown. Lift the hood of your vehicle and examine the belt. Twist and pinch the belt to inspect for any signs of wear, such as cracks, glazing rubber deposits, or fraying.

2. Check the Oil

car maintenanceMotor oil provides lubrication for the moving parts within your engine. If the oil gets too dirty or runs out, the friction produced by the metal can put excess wear on the engine and lead to overheating or a breakdown. Before a road trip, pull the dip stick out of the engine, wipe it down, and then dip it back in and out. Inspect the oil; if it’s dark or below the minimum line, it’s time for a change.

3. Top Off the Coolant

Coolant is a mixture of water and antifreeze, and it’s used to cool down the vehicle’s radiator. The coolant levels must be kept above the minimum to prevent a breakdown or permanent damage to the engine. Place a rag over the coolant cap and check to see if the liquid is at the full line; add an even amount of antifreeze and water until it’s full.
