Driving on low tires can affect your safety. When the pressure drops, the friction between the tire and the road increases; this can cause a blowout or even a car accident. To protect yourself and your vehicle, auto mechanics say it’s important to be aware of the following signs that indicate low tire pressure.

What Are the Signs of Low Tire Pressure?

1. Dashboard Light

Many vehicles are equipped with a tire pressure monitoring system that’s designed to alert you when the tire pressure is low. Check your vehicle’s owners manual, so you’re familiar with the lights and which one is attributed to the tire pressure. If it illuminates on the dashboard, pull over to the nearest gas station or a mechanic and fill up your tires with air.

2. Misalignment

mechanicIf your vehicle is pulling to one side of the road, this is a misalignment issue. Your steeling wheel might also sit crooked when you’re driving straight or take longer than usual to turn. While misalignment can be attributed to several issues, such as a heavy impact or worn parts, the first step is to check the pressure of your tires with a gauge, as low pressure can also affect handling and alignment.

3. Strange Noises

A squealing noise coming from your tires is often caused by underinflation; it’s the sound of the tires dragging against the road due to increased friction. Flapping noises are also a sign of low tire pressure, caused by a tire hitting the road or a possible flat. If you hear any of the above noises, you should pull over immediately and check the tires, as you could be close to a blowout.
