Carpets enhance the look of your home, but its fibers trap dust, dirt, hair, and allergens, which can contaminate your indoor air and trigger allergies. Adhering to a strict carpet cleaning regimen can help you control these issues and maintain rugs that feel and look their best. Here are a few tips for caring for your carpets.

Do:

Vacuum at least twice a week.carpet

In a perfect world, we would vacuum daily, but if that doesn’t fit into your schedule, aim for at least twice a week. Cleaning frequently will prevent the buildup of particles, which become tougher to remove as they settle deep into carpet fibers.

Avoid soaking the carpet.

Using a carpet shampoo can help remove stains and dirt from the surface, but over-dampening carpets can cause a musty odor. If you’re using liquids on your rugs or cleaning off stains, make sure to dry them afterward to prevent smells.

Don’t:

Rub stains.

Whether you spill wine or food on your carpet, never rub any kind of stain, which could cause it to spread and create a larger mark. To clean an accident, first vacuum off any lingering debris, then dab at the stain with a damp cloth. To wipe stains, mix some vinegar and water, and blot the area with that and warm water until the mark is gone.

Vacuum new carpeting.

If you just bought your carpet in last month or so, avoid vacuuming. New rugs have loose fibers, so if you vacuum before they compact with enough foot traffic, you may end up causing more damage than good.
