Installing a new parking lot or driveway can restore the functionality of the surface, prevent dangerous spills and car damage, and boost the curb appeal of the attached property. Asphalt paving is a complex process, which is why you should hire trained technicians to complete your project. Although contractors will do all the work, you should still know what steps are involved in the process. You’ll have a better idea of what to expect and how long the project will take to complete.

3 Stages Included in Asphalt Paving

1. Remove Existing Materials & Prepare the Surface

Before contractors can lay the new pavement, they must first prepare the site. This includes demolishing the current asphalt or concrete surfaces and hauling away the debris. After demolishing the current driveway, lot, road, or walkway, technicians then start the grading process. They use motor graders and additional tools to level the earth or create a slope. This allows water to drain away from the asphalt after it’s laid, which prevents moisture infiltration that leads to cracks and potholes.

2. Create the Subbase & Add Binder

After asphalt paving contractors grade the land, they begin the process of establishing the subbase. They will make sure it’s compacted to provide sturdy support for the new asphalt. The aggregates also prevent water from seeping into the subgrade. The binder layer is applied on top of the subbase. Made of a mixture of oil and aggregates, it serves as a durable foundation to enhance asphalt performance.

3. Apply New Asphalt

They then go over the surfaces with a roller to compact the wet material. They might also need to take measures to make the seams between the new installation and the surrounding pavement less noticeable.
