When you’re pregnant, your body undergoes a myriad of changes, several of which become evident in your skin. While your gynecologist has probably explained a few symptoms you can expect, understanding their causes and remedies will help you tailor your prenatal care routine. Below are the three biggest skin changes you can expect during pregnancy.

3 Ways Pregnancy Affects the Skin

1. Stretch Marks

As your body grows and shifts to accommodate the developing baby, your skin will be pulled tighter, resulting in stretch marks. While these are a natural part of pregnancy, some women still find them displeasing. To help prevent them, exercise, eat healthy foods to boost collagen production, and try using lotions that contain vitamin E, a nutrient that can help your skin retain moisture and firmness.

2. Dark, Splotchy Skin

gynecologistWith pregnancy comes an influx of hormones, and this affects the pigmentation of your skin. Higher hormone levels increase your pigmentation, resulting in dark splotches known as melasma. These patches are most commonly found on the face —  particularly the forehead and cheeks. Sunlight can cause and worsen these spots, so limit direct exposure, wear sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30, and speak with a trusted gynecologist or dermatologist if you’re concerned about the darker patches of skin.

3. Breakouts

During pregnancy, your body produces more blood than usual, and this increased circulation stimulates the oil glands in your skin. While this is what contributes to the famous ‘pregnancy glow’, it can also cause acne breakouts, and the hormonal fluctuations further exacerbate this. If a breakout occurs, avoid picking at or popping the bumps. Additionally, maintain a rigorous skincare routine, opting for products that reduce inflammation such as aloe and rose. However, avoid any products that contain harsh chemicals such as salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide, and retinoids.
