Aluminum and steel are two of the most popular choices when it comes to metal fabrication. Though they may look similar at first glance, it’s important to understand the differences between the two to decide which one is better for any given project. Here’s a guide to deciding between aluminum and steel.

How Are Aluminum & Steel Different?

Steel is made up of nickel, manganese, iron, and copper. For stainless steel, chromium oxide is added to make it resistant to rust and corrosion. Aluminum, on the other hand, is the most abundant metal on Earth, and it’s malleable, nonsparking, and nonmagnetic.

What Factors Should You Consider for Metal Fabrication?

1. Cost

Many factors affect the price of metals and alloys, including the availability of raw materials, fuel prices, and global supply and demand. In general, however, aluminum’s price can fall somewhere between carbon and stainless steel, but this could vary significantly depending on suppliers and state tariffs on imported goods.

2. Strength

3. Weight

Since carbon steel is about two and a half times more dense than aluminum, it’s a much heavier option. Aluminum’s lighter weight makes it the perfect material for construction projects and metal fabrications because it’s easy to move from one spot to the next and has a high strength-to-weight ratio.

4. Corrosion

Both aluminum and stainless steel have corrosion-resistant properties. As mentioned, the chromium oxide in stainless steel makes it rust- and corrosion-resistant, while aluminum naturally doesn’t rust.
