When the air quality in your home has you sniffling, congested, or generally irritated, something’s wrong. It could be the pollen in the air, or it could be a mechanical issue that requires the help of an HVAC contractor. However, don’t despair; by following a few simple steps, you can make your space more comfortable.

How to Reduce Indoor Air Pollution

1. Clean Often

The best way to minimize the effects of pollen and other allergens is to reduce their presence. Consistent cleaning is the most effective way to achieve this. Vacuum and dust your home from top to bottom at least once a week. Scrub the windows as well. If you have kids or pets, you’ll want to do these tasks more frequently.

2. Replace the HVAC Filters

Getting a new air filter is one of the first things you can do to improve indoor air quality. Once a filter is clogged, it fails to trap allergens and pollutants, leaving them free to travel through the system and back into the air. HVAC contractors recommend changing your filter every 90 days, or every 60 days if you have pets. For further protection, consider investing in a HEPA filter.

3. Open Your Windows

4. Get an Air Purifier

Sometimes you need a direct solution. If the previous preventative measures haven’t sufficed, get an air purifier. Although you can buy small, portable units for a single room, if the air quality is very poor or you have major respiratory health concerns, ask your HVAC contractor about a whole house system.

5. Grow Houseplants

While they aren’t a substitute for an air purifier, certain houseplants have been proven to remove traces of formaldehyde, benzene, and other dangerous chemicals. Note, some of these are toxic to humans and pets if accidentally ingested. For example, the Boston Fern and Bamboo Palm are safe for both cats and dogs, but Aloe Vera has been known to cause mild to moderate problems for both pet species. If you have young children or pets, always double-check whether something is a potential risk before bringing it in.
